PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Safety
Constantly on alert for any safety hazards that may cause harm to any employee or customer. Reporting and/or correcting/safeguarding any safety hazard, such as, but not limited to:   defective, damaged equipment, or leaking water at any site. Responsible for the safety of self and the other workers on the crew.
Responsible for being prepared to secure and/or correct defective, damaged, or leaking water facilities with appropriate equipment or safety supplies such as, but not limited to: barricades, safety cones, stakes & wood, etc.
Continually practices defensive driving techniques in the safe operation of company vehicles. Follows all safety guidelines and rules of both safety and vehicle committees. Is familiar with two-way radio and Radio Watch procedures. Keeps vehicle in good working order, including appearance, both inside and out.
Attends off-site and company safety classes and meetings as scheduled. Ensures safety of self.   Always puts personal safety ahead of getting the job done.
Administrative
Responsible for public contact during daily job assignments such as: Notification of service interruption, answering job related customer questions. Assists lead person in inventory and purchasing responsibilities. Required to be “On-Call” as determined by the Supervisor.
Completion and timely submission of all forms and documents related to employment, including weekly time sheets on date required to meet payroll schedules, and oversees various forms, documents, and reports submitted by the Utility Worker 1’s.
 
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED:
Is responsible for being professional and courteous with customers. Recognizes, demonstrates and enforces favorable customer and public relations.
Technical
Performs and oversees the maintenance and installation of water treatment facilities, primarily mains, services, pumps, filters, and valves. Performs light structural maintenance, including painting, carpentry, and other related tasks. Repairs customer landscaping after leak repairs are completed.
Extensive knowledge of water treatment maintenance, system operation including associated materials and equipment. May be required to identify and mark sub-structures for "Underground Service Alert."
Performs a variety of tasks utilizing small tools, including digging and backfilling trenches, loading material, operating mud pumps, air compressors, generators, valve operating equipment, boring machines, and jackhammers.
Maintains assigned tools and other Company equipment. Understands and works in conformance with safe operating practices and rules.
Performs other duties as may be assigned such as, but not limited to, paperwork and reports: "Material Used" reports, permit and excavation requests, time cards, monthly "Vehicle Maintenance" reports.
Will be required to be "On-Call" as determined by the Supervisor.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
PhysicalDemands:
Has muscular coordination and full body mobility for bending, stooping, lifting and raising objects to a maximum of 60 pounds. Has hand, wrist, and arm dexterity for working with tools in tight spaces and for safe operation of vehicles and construction equipment. Ability to visually distinguish utility markings and differentiate colors for construction markings, measurement and diagnostic tools, instruments, meters, maps and drawings. Sufficient hearing to work safely in outside areas that are often confined and congested, and for contact on 2-way radio for emergency situations. Frequently works outside and may be subjected to adverse working conditions and inclement weather.
 
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS CONTINUED:
Education and Certification:
High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Water Treatment Operator Grade T-3 & Distribution Operator Grade D-3 certification from the California Department of Health Services is required. Prior training to be a “competent person” for trench shoring, confined space training, water loss and leak detection training desired. 
Work Experience:
A minimum of three years of employment in a regulated utility industry, preferably water, with emphasis in areas outlined in this job description. Specific training and knowledge in the areas of repair and installation of water mains, fire hydrants, water services and meter replacement, preferred. 2 years supervisory experience.
Specific Knowledge and Skills:
Must have legible handwriting, ability to complete simple and accurate arithmetic calculations and be able to understand job related oral and written instructions. Has ability to observe and note unusual operating conditions of equipment. Understands proper application of equipment and tools required for the job. Has ability to use small hand tools and other operating equipment for specific jobs. Is responsible for fostering excellent customer relations through effective use of communication. Has knowledge of supervisory methods. Good knowledge of water distribution systems. Computer skills preferred.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Has a valid California driver’s license with an acceptable driving record, as determined by the Company's insurance carrier.
